Pinay in Alaska recalls quake experience: We were terrified

A Filipino in Alaska recalled on Monday her experience when the magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck the southern Kenai Peninsula last week.

"It was getting stronger and we were scared. We were terrified that the building might collapse," Flor Persigas-Weaver said in an interview on Balitanghali.

Weaver said she was at work when the powerful earthquake happened.

Though some roads were heavily damaged, accessibility and mobility along their community were not totally paralyzed as alternate routes were available, she said.

"Okay lang kami, okay lang kami ngayon. 'Di naman kami naapektuhan sa aming bahay, walang na-damage," Weaver added.

She, however, mentioned that they are still experiencing aftershocks.

Philippine officials said no Filipinos were hurt in the earthquake.

Consul General Henry Bensurto in of the San Franciso Philippine Consulate said there are more than 25,000 Filipinos in Alaska, and that Filipinos make up 52 percent of Alaska’s Asian and Pacific Islander population and represented the largest racial minority in Anchorage, which was the epicenter of the recent quake. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
