Erika Joyce Lagradilla tried to save her new husband Leomer from drowning but she herself went under while they were snorkelling in waters off Dhiffushi island in the Maldives.
According to Joseph Morong's report on "24 Oras", rescuers managed to get to the newly-weds to bring them to safety but they were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the authorities in the Maldives were already looking into incident.
Thirty-year-old Erika was an overseas Filipino worker in Saudi Arabia; 29-year-old Leomer, in Singapore.
High school sweethearts Erika and Leomer had been together for ten years but had to endure a long distance relationship as they pursued their respective professions.
They got married on December 18.
"We will continue to explore and conquer the world," Erika said in her vows on that day. —NB, GMA News
