No Filipino hurt in car bomb explosion in Libya

No Filipino was hurt in the car bomb explosion in Benghazi which killed two members of United Nations Support Mission staff, according to the Philippine Embassy in Libya.

“The Embassy is in touch with members of the Filipino Community in Benghazi and has been informed that there are no Filipinos in the initial list of casualties,” the Philippine Embassy in Libya said in a statement on Saturday.

The attack on Saturday happened in the middle of the arrangement of UN for a truce in the capital Tripoli, where the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) force launched a surprise attack in April, part of the chaos in Libya since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Due to this, the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli is monitoring the situation in Hawari District, where the attack happened.

According to a report by Mao dela Cruz on Dobol B sa News TV, the embassy said the explosion happened near a supermarket where many Filipinos frequently go to shop.

“The Philippine Embassy in Tripoli is monitoring the aftermath of the car bombing this afternoon in the Hawari District of Benghazi that reportedly killed two staff members of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and wounded several others,” the embassy said.

“In the wake of this incident, the Embassy advises our kababayan in Benghazi to be on alert and to avoid any unnecessary movement for the time being,” it added. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
