Over 300 Pinoy seafarers from Germany sent home after two months of seeking repatriation

Over 300 Filipino crew members of the Sea Chefs and TUI Cruises from Hamburg, Germany, have arrived in the country after seeking repatriation for the last two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

In a statement, the DFA said the seafarers left Hamburg on May 24 via a chartered TUI Airlines flight, and arrived in the Philippines on May 25.

The Filipino crew sought repatriation after their usual cruise liner routes, mainly in the Caribbean region, were suspended.

They were assisted by TUI Staff, Philippine Ambassador to Germany Ma. Theresa Dizon-De Vega, and Labor Attaché Delmer Cruz during their send-off.

Cruz said the seafarers could apply for the government’s social amelioration program of AKAP at the different OWWA regional offices.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Copenhagen on May 12 rolled out its online application and appointment system.

Priority services included passport processing, notarials, and release of previously-processed documents. The embassy’s clients were served on-site following the calendar of the applicants' confirmed schedules.

On the other hand, the Philippine Embassy in Doha and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO-Qatar) collaborated with the Qatar authorities in distributing Zakat gifts to the Filipino community in celebration of the Eid'l Fitr.

The Zakat gifts comprised of 4,000 food parcels, which were donated by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs (MADLSA), the Ministry of Interior (MOI), and Qatar Charity to the Philippine Embassy and POLO-Qatar on May 22 at Migrant Filipino Workers and Other Filipinos Resource Center (MWOFRC),
