Malacañang on Thursday expressed sadness over the death of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) awaiting repatriation to the Philippines in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Palace is saddened by the unfortunate death of a seafarer on board the Harmony of the Seas for repatriation,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.

Concerned authorities are investigating the incident, he added.

Roque asked concerned government agencies to look into the mental anguish of those adversely impacted by the pandemic.

“The worldwide pandemic is taking an emotional toll on everyone and we must help our countrymen how to cope with stress, fear and worry in this challenging time,” he said.

He also said that the government is finding ways to “further expedite” the return of OFWs displaced by the pandemic.

The Department of Labor and Employment earlier said some 16,000 OFWs were scheduled to arrive in the country this month. -NB, GMA News
