Fil-Am community organizer in Los Angeles dies of COVID-19

A Filipino-American community organizer in Los Angeles has died of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

According to an obituary published by the New York Times, John Eric Swing, 48, passed away on June 28 in a hospital in Fountain Valley, California.

He was the executive director of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), a nonprofit organization which provides services to the Fil-Am community.

called him the "driving force" in the Historic Filipinotown, which houses food startups in LA.

A statement from Swing's family described him as a Asian-American advocate, Marine Corps veteran, and ethnic studies scholar. 

He previously visited the Philippines and worked with government officials "on intergovernmental collaborations and issues related to the Asian American community like Hepatitis B and healthcare access programs for Asian immigrants."

The community mourned his loss and his online memorial was attended by Mayor Eric Garcetti and the filmmaker Ava DuVernay. 

Swing is survived by his parents Ellis and Aurora, wife Ellen, and their six children. —MGP, GMA News
