2 Pinoy survivors from cattle ship sinking to return home on Sept 19

Two Filipino survivors of the ill-fated M/V Gulf Livestock 1 that capsized off the coast of Japan will return home to the Philippines on Saturday, September 19, the Department of Labor and Employment said.

In a report to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, Labor Attache Elizabeth Marie Estrada of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Osaka said Chief Officer Eduardo Sareno and A/B Jay-nel Rosales are flying home via Philippine Airlines flight PR 427 from Narita Airport and arriving in Manila on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Sareno was rescued by the Japan Coast Guard on September 3, while Rosales was rescued on September 6. Both were confined at the Kagoshima-ken Kenritsu Ooshima Hospital and were later transferred to the Hotel New Amami while waiting for their repatriation to the Philippines.

Estrada said they constantly monitored the physical and mental well-being of Sareno and Rosales before their repatriation.

She added that the POLO had also sent clothing, toiletries, and money for essential needs to each of the two survivors.

Sareno and Rosales were among the 43 crewmen on the M/V Gulf Livestock 1 that capsized in early September after experiencing engine problems amid a typhoon in the seas in southern Japan.

The ship, with a cargo of nearly 6,000 head of cattle, sent a distress call from the west of Amami Oshima Island in southwestern Japan on September 2 as Typhoon Maysak lashed the area with strong winds and heavy seas.

The crew of 43 was made up of 39 Filipinos, two Australians, and two New Zealanders.

A crewman from the ship died after being pulled unconscious from the water by the Japanese coast guard on September 4.

The Japan Coast Guard, meanwhile, said it will continue its search and rescue operations to find the other 40 missing crew members. — DVM, GMA News
