317 Filipinos return home to Manila from Lebanon

A total of 317 Filipino nationals were repatriated back to Manila from Beirut, Lebanon via a special chartered flight amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Malacañang announced Saturday.

The Office of the Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs said that this was the fifth chartered repatriation flight from Lebanon since June.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,596 Filipino nationals in Lebanon have been repatriated since December 2019.

The office said that the mission was ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte after his address at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

“The twin missions demonstrate the continuing commitment of the Philippine Government to assist Filipinos who wish to return home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, as well as the solidarity of the Filipino nation with the Lebanese people,” the office said.

At the assembly, Duterte announced that the government “embarked on an unprecedented repatriation program” to bring home over 345,000 overseas Filipino workers.
