Pinoy in Taiwan fined $3,500 over 8-second quarantine violation —report

A Filipino migrant worker in Taiwan was fined $3,500 for breaking quarantine regulations for just eight seconds, according to a CNN report.

The report said the man was caught on CCTV stepping out of his hotel room in Kaohsiung City where he was undergoing quarantine.

A hotel staff contacted the city's Department of Health to report the violation.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people in Taiwan are not allowed to leave their rooms, no matter for how long, when they are on quarantine, according to rules.

Taiwan has kept the pandemic well under control thanks to early and effective prevention, and has been very cautious about when it may re-open its borders, which are still largely closed to visitors.

Taiwan has also seen a slow but steady increase in the number of imported virus cases, which has unnerved the government even though there are only around 100 active infections in total on the island who are either in isolation or being treated in hospital.

The government has responded with a tightening of measures, including mandating negative COVID-19 tests for almost all arrivals. --with Reuters/GMA News
