Pinoys in NZ's North Island told to evacuate after tsunami warning

Filipinos in New Zealand's North Island have been told to evacuate to high ground due to a tsunami warning following a magnitude 8.1 earthquake.

"Kababayan near coast from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolagay Bay & Great Barrier Island must move immediately!" said Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Jesus S. Domingo in a Facebook post on Friday.

A Pacific-wide tsunami alert was issued Friday after an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck near New Zealand's remote Kermadec islands, following two powerful quakes earlier.

New Zealand ordered coastal evacuations as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned waves of up to three meters (10 feet) were possible in the Pacific region nations of Vanuatu and the French territory of New Caledonia.

"Based on all available data, hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts," it said.

It said smaller waves were possible as far afield as Japan, Russia, Mexico and the South American coast.

No tsunami alert, meanwhile, was raised in the Philippines. --KBK, GMA News
