Two Pinoys get attacked in New York

NEW YORK - Two Filipinos were recently attacked in separate incidents in Midtown Manhattan in New York.

The first victim was a 73-year-old Filipino who was attacked on 8th Avenue on Sunday.

In a video released by the New York Police Department Crime Stopper, a suspect was seen pushing the victim to the ground.

The victim suffered bruises on the face and is currently recovering.

The suspect who was immediately arrested by responding policemen was identified as Dominick Staton, 44, a homeless man.

The second victim was a 53-year-old Filipino who was attacked last Monday at a fast food chain in Midtown.

The NYPD Crime Stopper released the video showing the incident and asked the public for information about the suspect.

In the video, the victim was seen ordering food at the counter when the suspect approached and threatened him.

A customer stood by while the suspect punched and kicked the victim before taking the latter's cellphone and cash and fleeing.

The victim sustained bruises and wounds on the face and was brought to a hospital.

The NYPD is still investigating if the two incidents are hate crimes.

This is the 34th time a Filipino was attacked, according to the Philippine Consulate General in New York.

Two weeks ago, a Filipina suffered an unprovoked attack in Yonkers, New York.

Consul General Elmer Cato advised Filipinos in New York to be vigilant and exercise precautions.

The Filipino community meanwhile is organizing a rally to condemn the attacks. —KG, GMA News
