Almost 3M overseas Filipinos went home due to COVID-19 —NTF

A total of 2,790,989 Filipinos abroad returned to the Philippines amid the COVID-19 pandemic as of May 14, according to the report of the National Task Force COVID-19 released on Monday.

The Task Group on Management of Returning Overseas Filipinos said 2,066,628 of them were overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Of the number, 1,297,109 were land-based while 769,519 were sea-based.

Based on the report, a total of 6,523 deceased overseas Filipinos were transported back to the country, 640  of them died due to COVID-19.

Of the 32,594 returning overseas Filipinos who tested positive for COVID-19, 29 passed away while 32,515 recovered from the disease.

Government assisted 1,023,980 returning Filipinos through its One-Stop-Shop for the Management of Returning Overseas Filipinos (OSS-MROF) as well as with its Balik Probinsya and Uwian Na programs.

At least 802,538 returned to their home regions while 829,067 were provided with free food and accommodation through OFW Kalinga.

On Sunday, the Philippines recorded this year's lowest COVID-19 active cases count at 2,908, with an additional 210 new cases.

The new COVID-19 infections brought the total caseload to 3,688,132, based on the Department of Health’s (DOH) website.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA News
