Pope Francis on Saturday evening (Manila time) named a Cebu auxiliary bishop to head the diocese of Dumaguete in Negros Oriental.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said the appointment of Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Julio Cortes as bishop of Dumaguete was announced in Rome at noon, or 6 p.m. in Manila.

"Cortes will become the fourth ordinary of the diocese, which has been without a bishop since May 2012 following Archbishop John Du’s installation as head of the Archdiocese of Palo," it said.

As the new bishop of Dumaguete, Cortes will serve about 40 parishes with around one million Catholics, the CBCP said.

It also said Cortes is familiar with Dumaguete since he had served as parish priest in Bacong, Negros Oriental for more than five years.

Bacong is part of Dumaguete diocese, where Cortes served as the Dumaguete diocese’s vicar general for 11 years.

He then served diocesan administrator until Du was installed bishop in July 2001.

Cortes was born in Parañaque City in 1956 and was ordained in 1980.

Following his episcopal ordination in 2002, he served as a member of the CBCP Commission on Culture and Commission on Liturgy.

Cortes has chaired the CBCP Permanent Committee on Cultural Heritage of the Church since 2009. — LBG, GMA News
