Spicy empanadas and dulce de leche: The dishes that tickle Pope Francis’ taste buds

Although now based in Italy, Pope Francis still craves his homeland's cuisine, according to a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali on Monday.

Argentine cuisine is a fusion of indigenous and Mediterranean influences, and with the country being a major beef producer, it is no surprise that steak and spicy beef empanadas count among the pontiff's favorite dishes.

According to the executive chef of Argentine restaurant La Cabrera, Argentinian taste buds prefer salty food.

"We don't eat sweet food, but we eat a lot of desserts. I could say that our taste is more salty, and definitely not sweet," Chef Juan Barcos said.

While he was a cardinal in Argentina, the pope also favored skinless baked chicken with salad and fruits for dessert paired with a glass of wine, the report said.

And for dessert, he enjoyed dulce de leche, which in Argentina is usually spread on biscuits called alfajores.

A cookbook written by Sgt. Erwin Niederberger, one of the pope's Swiss guards who happens to be a trained chef, revealed that Pope Francis also loves the Italian dish saltimbocca alla Romana—prosciutto and veal cooked in white wine and butter.

The book "Buon Appetito, Swiss Guard" also reveals the favorite dishes of Saint Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
