More than 24 hours before Pope Francis is to lead a Mass there, Filipinos from Visayas and Mindanao started camping out at the Tacloban Airport Friday to wait for him.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, people from as far south as Surigao City and Surigao del Norte in Mindanao had brought food and belongings to the airport, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported from Tacloban City.

Several of them also posed for souvenir shots of what they consider a once-in-a-lifetime experience of meeting being in the presence of the Pope, the report said.

They added they were excited to be with the pope on Saturday.

Pope Francis, who arrived in the Philippines Thursday, is to go to Leyte on Saturday for a Mass in Tacloban City and a lunch with survivors of recent calamities.

Meanwhile, dzBB's Mateo reported white ribbons symbolizing the Pope's purity have been placed around Tacloban City.
