BORN TO BE WILD
Inside Mining: Nickel
Airing date: March 14, 2012
From our kitchen pots and pans, to the cell phones and gadgets that almost never leave the modern person’s hands, almost everything that has made today’s lifestyle possible comes from mining. Towering skyscrapers, trains, cars – everything that is made from metal has been mined to give way to modern life.
But some ask: at what price?
Last week, Doc Nielsen and Kiko Rustia delved into the gold mining industry. Five hundred meters below the ground, ore is harvested to be sold and turned into expensive jewelry. This week, the wild tandem will look into the mining of nickel in the country to show how important this mineral is to daily life. Doc Nielsen travels to Palawan, dubbed as the country’s last frontier, because of its rich biodiversity. He visits the country’s largest nickel mining operation and discovers how this mineral has made modern life possible, but at what some say, is an environmental cost. Do the benefits truly out way the sacrifices?
