“Unang Hakbang”
Documentary by Mariz Umali
December 26, 2011

Just recently, an explosion rocked a pension house in Zamboanga City. Barely a week after an Australian was kidnapped in the area. Yet despite these tragic events there is good news to be found.

Tucked away in the outskirts of Zamboanga Sibugay, 4 hours away from the city, Mariz Umali travels to meet Marlon. Marlon was born with a congenital defect that left him with only one functional leg. He hops on one foot for two hours to just to make it to school.

The conflict in their area leaves people like Marlon almost inaccessible to any form of help. But this will soon change with the arrival of Jayson Cardente. Photographer and volunteer, and luckily, Marlon’s new neighbor, Jayson was able to appeal for help from a foundation in Zamboanga City. Marlon will soon experience walking on two legs.

Mariz Umali also meets 72 year-old Asyong who was left with one leg after being hit by a train at the age of 10. But Asyong found ways to get around his disability and was able to make an improvised leg from wood, cloth, and a dozen strings and rubber bands. After 60 long years, he will be finally given a proper prosthetic leg.

Mariz Umali will join Marlon and Asyong on their journey as they take their first steps to a new life, on Monday, December 26, on I-Witness.
