'Fimagas Class of 2022', dokumentaryo ni Atom Araullo, ngayong Sabado sa 'I-Witness'

“FIMAGAS CLASS OF 2022”
Sa loob ng siyam na taon, matiyagang pinupuntahan ng gurong si Wylonee ang Barangay Fimagas sa bayan ng Katipunan, Zamboanga Del Norte. Sakay ng habal-habal, aabot sa tatlong oras ang biyahe niya sa maputik at lubak-lubak na kalsada. Sa liblib na komunidad na ito, mga katutubong Subanen ang kanyang tinuturuan sa elementarya.
Ang mga batang Subanen, likas daw na mahiyain pero uhaw sa pagkatuto. Kaya naman ang mga tulad ni Teacher Wylonee ang nagsisilbi nilang tanglaw para sa minimithing edukasyon. Isa sa mga batang lubos na natuto sa eskuwelahan ang dose anyos na si Laida. Dahil sa sipag at talino ng bata, itinanghal siyang class valedictorian.

Hindi maitago ng mga guro at estudyante ang pagkasabik sa kanilang pagtatapos sa elementarya. Magmula kasi nang mangyari ang pandemya, ngayon na lang ulit sila magsasagawa ng graduation ceremony sa kanilang campus at entablado. Hindi rin naging madali sa mga estudyante ang mga nagdaang school year lalo na noong naging modular ang paraan ng pagtuturo sa kanila.
Sumama si Atom Araullo sa paglalakbay na ito upang pakinggan ang natatanging kuwento ni Teacher Wylonee. Sa kabila ng mga pagsubok sa kaniyang dinaranas sa loob ng halos isang dekada, hindi magawang iwanan ni Teacher Wylonee ang Barangay Fimagas. Mas matimbang pa rin sa kaniya na maturuan ang mga batang Subanen na matindi ang pangangailangan sa edukasyon.

In her 9 years of teaching, riding a dirt bike would be Wylonee’s weekly grind to reach Barangay Fimagas. Located in the remote and mountainous municipality of Katipunan, province of Zamboanga Del Norte, this village is home to the indigenous tribe of Subanen. At the end of Wylonee’s rough and muddy journey, the Subanen grade school students await her.
Despite their timid character towards outsiders, Subanen kids are very active in school and has a great desire to learn. They look up to their teachers, including Wylonee, as their hope to having a formal education. One of their top students, 12-year-old Laida, will finish her elementary curriculum with flying colors as their class valedictorian.
Now more than ever, the school campus is filled with so much excitement as they carry out their first face to face graduation ceremonies since the COVID-19 pandemic happened. The previous school years are extra challenging to the teachers and students especially with the implementation of modular learning approach.
In this documentary, Atom Araullo joins Wylonee in this journey to a far flung community to hear her stories of struggle and hope. Despite all the hardships, she has sworn to herself that she will never leave Fimagas over other teaching opportunities. She always believes that it’s her life mission to give the Subanens the education that they deserve.
