Danger to divers: Understanding decompression sickness

During the tense days searching for the bodies of Jesse Robredo and two pilots, the most hazardous job belonged to so-called technical divers, trained to probe depths of over 200 feet. Among the dangers they faced was "bends," or decompression sickness, an extremely painful and sometimes fatal condition that occurs when a diver ascends too fast. This is what reportedly happened to German volunteer diver Danny Brumbach, who has since recovered.
