AFTER DAVAO QUAKE

Tsunami warning canceled, wave heights back to normal

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has lifted the tsunami warning issued in the Davao Oriental region on Saturday after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Governor Generoso at 11:39 a.m.

In its final Tsunami Information issued at 3 p.m., PHIVOLCS said wave heights have returned to the "normal tide level."

"With this, any effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed and therefore DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled recommendations prescribed in our Tsunami Advisory issued for this event," the advisory said.

Earlier, PHIVOLCS advised residents in at least 11 provinces to stay away from the beach and coastal areas where minor sea level disturbances associated with the earthquake were recorded.

This was after the PHIVOLCS monitoring station in Mati, Davao recorded minor waves that had maximum height of 0.08 meter.
