Kanlaon enters period of unrest; Alert Level 1 up
PHIVOLCS on Wednesday raised the alert level in Kanlaon Volcano from 0 (normal) to 1 (abnormal) due to increased seismic activity.
According to PHIVOLCS, the volcano's seismic monitoring network recorded 80 volcanic quakes on Tuesday. Of the 80 quakes, 77 were "low frequency events that are associated with magmatic fluids beneath the edifice," it said.

It added that the increased seismic activity "could be succeeded by steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit crater, despite the absence of visible degassing or steaming from the active vent this year."
Alert Level 1 means the volcano is at an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest.
Because of this, entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited.
Pilots are also advised against flying close to the volcano's summit as doing so could be hazardous.
Kanlaon is located between Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental in the Visayas. —KBK, GMA News
