DOST awards P1M grant to Xavier University for microorganism research

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 10 has awarded a P1-million grant to Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City for its research project on the use of microbial cocktails as an alternative to pesticides.

According to DOST, the fund will be used for a research project on the formulation of microbial cocktails from indigenous microorganisms (IMOs).

“The use of microbial cocktails from IMOs as an alternative to conventional pesticides for house flies and crop pathogens will be investigated in the study,” the DOST said in its weekly report.

“The formulated microbial cocktails will be studied for their characteristics as biodegradation-enhancers for compostable wastes.”

The department said the research aims to promote sustainable and environment-friendly alternatives to traditional practices utilizing chemical agents.

“It will also provide evidence in controlled laboratory conditions to support the practice of the usage of IMOs. The use of IMOs will provide sustainable, cost-effective, and natural alternatives for farmers,” it said.

The agency said the funds were transferred through the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research and Development.

DOST signs MOU

The DOST also announced that Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato de la Peña and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) chief Kong Wy Mun signed on October 25 a memorandum of understanding on scientific and technological cooperation.

Under the MOU, the DOST said the agency and the SCE will carry out joint scientific and technological activities on water and waste management, food safety and security, aquaculture, and digital governance, among others.  — VBL, GMA News
