Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes offshore Davao Occidental


A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit offshore Sarangani in Davao Occidental on Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The quake occurred at 10:26 a.m., PHIVOLCS said.

The tectonic earthquake had its epicenter at 03.27°N, 126.67°E - 275 km S 30° E of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The quake had a depth of 33 kilometers.

It was felt at the following intensities:

  • Intensity III: Sarangani, Davao Occidental
  • Intensity I: Lebak, Sultan Kudarat

 

PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected but aftershocks may occur.

Meanwhile, no tsunami is expected, PHIVOLCS said.

"No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," it said in its advisory.

 

 

PHIVOLCS initially reported the earthquake at magnitude 6.5, then revised it to 6.1

Earlier in the day, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Baganga town in Davao Oriental at 4:43 a.m. —KG, GMA News
