The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Thursday said it established its first seismic station in Iloilo province to further boost the agency's monitoring of volcanic activities, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

The station is located in Central Azucarera de San Antonio, Inc. sugarcane plantation at Barangay Ponong Pequeño, Dueñas town.

The agency said it is the 115th seismic station in the country.

“With the addition of the Dueñas Iloilo Seismic Station to the Philippine Seismic Network, the monitoring capability of the institute is further enhanced. This allows faster and more accurate issuance of earthquake information to decision makers, emergency responders, and the general public,” PHIVOLCS said in a statement.

“The improved determination of earthquake parameters and detectability of seismic events will be important inputs for earthquake disaster preparedness and risk reduction,” it added.

The onsite inauguration will be held on Thursday, April 28, PHIVOLCS said. —LDF, GMA News
