7 volcanic quakes recorded in Bulusan Volcano in the past 24 hours —PHIVOLCS

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Tuesday said a total of seven volcanic earthquakes have been monitored in Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the past 24 hours.

This is lower compared to the 29 volcanic earthquakes reported on Monday.

In its 5 a.m. volcano bulletin, PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 1 is still raised over Bulusan.

The plume from the volcano's crater rose up to 150 meters tall then drifted northwest, according to PHIVOLCS.

The volcano’s edifice was also inflated, it added.

PHIVOLCS prohibited entry into the four-kilometer-radius of the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and entry without vigilance into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ). Flying any aircraft near the volcano is also not allowed.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may happen based on the volcano’s activity, according to PHIVOLCS.

On Sunday morning, Bulusan Volcano had a phreatic eruption that lasted for 17 minutes which prompted the local government to evacuate affected residents.

The municipalities of Juban, Casiguran, and Irosin experienced ashfall from the volcano. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
