11 volcanic quakes recorded in Bulusan Volcano in past 24 hours —PHIVOLCS

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday said 11 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded in Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the past 24 hours.

This is higher compared to the seven volcanic earthquakes reported on Tuesday.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin on Wednesday, PHIVOLCS said the plume from the volcano's crater rose up to 200 meters tall, which is taller compared to the 150 meters of plume previously recorded.

The volcano emitted 1,421 tons of sulfur dioxide on Tuesday, according to the PHIVOLCS. Bulusan’s edifice was also inflated, it added.

Alert Level 1 is maintained over the volcano.

PHIVOLCS prohibits entry into the four-kilometer radius of the Permanent Danger Zone and entry without vigilance into the Extended Danger Zone. Flying any aircraft near the volcano is also not allowed.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may happen based on the volcano’s activity, PHIVOLCS said.

On Sunday morning, Bulusan Volcano had a phreatic eruption that lasted for 17 minutes, prompting the local government to evacuate affected residents.

The municipalities of Juban, Casiguran, and Irosin experienced ashfall from the volcano.  —KBK, GMA News
