PHIVOLCS: 20 volcanic quakes recorded in Kanlaon in past 24 hours

By GMA News

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday reported at least 20 volcanic earthquakes in Kanlaon Volcano in the past 24 hours.

Based on the PHIVOLCS’ latest report, the volcano has emitted 151 tonnes of sulfur dioxide since May 1.

The height of the plume could not be measured by the agency since the view was obscured.

The PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 1, or low-level unrest, remained over Kanlaon Volcano, whose edifice is "slightly inflated."

The agency warned that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and flying any aircraft close to the volcano is strictly prohibited.

It added that possible hazards that can occur include sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Renato Solidum Jr. said last week that what concerns the agency are the "tornillo-type volcanic earthquakes" monitored around Kanlaon in the past few days.

According to him, the tornillo volcanic earthquake is usually followed by a phreatic or steam-driven explosion. —Richa Noriega/VBL, GMA News
