Magnitude 5.3 quake jolts Surigao del Sur

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocked Cortes in Surigao del Sur on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In a bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, was recorded at 9:12 a.m.

It had a depth of 10 kilometers with an epicenter at 49 kilometers east of Cortes.

PHIVOLCS reported the following intensities:

• Intensity IV - Tandag City, Surigao del Sur
• Intensity III - Lanuza, Surigao del Sur
• Intensity II - Lianga, Surigao del Sur

It also reported the following instrumental intensities:

• Intensity II - Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte;
• Intensity I - Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Tandag, Surigao del Sur

PHIVOLCS said no damage was expected from the quake although aftershocks may occur. —KBK, GMA News
