A Lenovo K-800 device targeting the Chinese market will be chipmaker Intel's first foray into the smartphone business, tech site Mashable reported.
Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Intel chips will finally be in phones outside of trade shows.
Lenovo senior vice president Liu Jun then joined Otellini on stage to reveal the K800, whose first carrier will be China Unicom, the Mashable report said.
Mashable noted this will be Intel's first real entry to the smartphone market - a latecomer compared to ARM, whose technology is in many mobile devices today.
The phone will use Intel's Medfield chip, which is part of Intel’s Atom line. It will have a 4.5-inch screen and is less than 0.4 inch thick.
It can perform intensive tasks such as playing 1080p video through an HDMI port to a external HDTV, and can do near-field communication (NFC) for mobile payments.
