Malware spoofs official Olympics apps

As the 2012 Games officially started Saturday (Manila time), so have cyberscammers targeting users of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

 

One cyberscam involved malware being offered in Russian websites and spoofing the official mobile game for the 2012 Games, security vendor GFI said Saturday.

 

"One of our researchers in the AV Labs spotted a couple of Russian websites, which claim to be legitimate app markets, housing malicious files purporting to be the official London 2012 mobile game," it said (http://feeds.feedburner.com/GFILabs).

 

It said the screenshot of the fake app market appears to mimic the look and feel of the legitimate Google Play website.

 

Another fake app market appeared to specifically target Samsung phone users, it added.

 

The fake app spoofs the "London 2012 – Official Mobile Game," a smartphone app for Android, iOS, and Blackberry users.

 

GFI said the legitimate mobile game features nine Olympic games, including Archery, Double Trap Shooting, 110m Hurdles and Swimming, in authentic London 2012 venues.

 

GFI said its antivirus products can detect the malicious files Trojan.AndroidOS.Generic.A.

 

It advised users to download the games at the official sites of the Official London 2012 Mobile Apps; London 2012 Mobile Game on Google Play; London 2012 for iOS on iTunes; and Official Video Game Page of the Olympics. — TJD, GMA News
