Now this is something Apple can't accuse Samsung of aping.

The Korean electronics giant is working on a 16-megapixel point-and-shoot camera based on its Galaxy S III device, according to a report on GSMArena.com.

Citing a tip from an anonymous source, the site said convergence device will be called "Samsung Galaxy S camera" and will have Samsung's famed 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED screen, while running on Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Citing descriptions by its source, GSMArena.com said the new device is a virtual Galaxy S III "glued to the back of a point-and-shoot camera."

It has no physical buttons on the back and is reportedly 1.5 to two times thicker than an S III.

"The camera will feature a 16MP sensor of unkown size, a pop-out Xenon flash and a curved right side to help with the ergonomics," it said.

It will also have Wi-Fi and 3G+Wi-Fi variants, though there will be no voice capability.

A separate article on tech site Mashable said Samsung isn’t the only company to launch a smart camera as Nikon rrecently announced its own Android-powered Coolpix S800c.

"While it runs the much older Android 2.3., Nikon’s camera has full access to the Google Play marketplace, so you can run any apps that are compatible with the older OS. It will be available in September," it noted.

Polaroid also unveiled an Android-powered camera at the Consumer Electronics Show in January but it has yet to get an official release date, Mashable added. — TJD, GMA News
