Still reeling from criticism over its glitch-riddled Maps for iOS 6, Apple Inc. may be facing a brewing problem with another of its prized features: Siri.

A report on tech site Mashable said Siri gave New York residents the weather not for the Big Apple but for New York, Texas, a small community in Henderson County over 2,300km away.

"Don’t be ashamed if you’ve never heard of it. New York, Texas is a town so small it’s unincorporated, with a population measured in the dozens," Mashable said.

But it said that, as of Tuesday afternoon (in Manila), Apple had yet to explain how Siri could have confused a town with a city of 10 million people.

For now, it theorized what happened could be a routing snafu specific to Siri.

"If you check Apple’s weather app for New York temperatures, it gives correct results for the city," it noted.

Also, it said that when one asks Siri for the weather in Brooklyn, "she returns results for Brooklyn, Ohio."

But Mashable noted the problem could be unrelated to iOS 6, noting complaints had been posted on Apple support about the New York weather result as early as Sept. 19.

"But given the widespread reports of trouble with Apple’s Maps app in iOS 6, this location-based mixup couldn’t have come at a worse time," it said. — TJD, GMA News
