During this past weekend’s Spike Video Game Awards 2012, new trailers were shown by the various video game companies, aiming to tease their fan-base with what is coming next year and beyond. One of these so-called teasers was a mysterious new game called “The Phantom Pain”, a suspense thriller type of action game that left many in awe and wonder. It’s a shifty kind of trailer that doesn’t present anything other than a story… And begs the question whether it teases something bigger and grander that fans of a certain stealth game may bite into. Developed by a company that calls itself “Moby Dick Studio”, the two minute plus “Phantom Pain” trailer presents an ominous situation: An injured man missing his left arm wakes up inside a hospital, only to find it under attack the moment he starts to get his bearings. Soon, the entire facility descends into chaos, with mysterious armed men attacking and killing anyone on site. With the help of a fellow patient, the injured man tries desperately to escape, hiding and avoiding detection at every turn while the action intersperses with black screens that fill with text representing the character’s thoughts, questioning whether everything is real or not. The trailer ends with what appears to be a giant metallic monster engulfed in flames attacking the hospital, cutting to the game’s title and then a final scene showing the injured man’s full features while he lies in the floor at gunpoint, obviously recognizable and looking a lot like Snake/ Big Boss from Konami’s own Metal Gear Solid series! It’s still speculation at this point, but a lot of fans are pointing out that “The Phantom Pain” may actually be Metal Gear Solid 5 in disguise. It’s clear and confirmed that a new game is coming from creator Hideo Kojima and Konami, which is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes – a direct sequel to MGS3 Snake Eater and MGS Peace Walker. The last two use the new “Fox Engine” by Kojima Productions and features Big Boss/ Naked Snake again as the protagonist. However, Kojima has continuously teased that he is developing ANOTHER Metal Gear Solid title. And this Phantom Pain game by developer “Moby Dick Studio” could be misdirection from the gaming guru and his company to keep fans in the dark. Aside from the fact that the main character in the trailer looks like a Snake, the action scenes where the military attack and the way the patients “run and hide” look awfully like something right out of a Metal Gear Solid game. What’s more, the metallic monster in flames looks like Metal Gear Ray on fire. All in all, take it as a rumor for now until official word from Konami comes.
