Bad news for Instagram users with BlackBerry 10 devices, at least for now: the popular photo sharing site presently has no plans to make a native app for BB10, a tech site reported.

A report on All Things Digital cited sources close to Instagram as saying Instagram may instead offer a port of the app from Instagram for Android.

"There will be no (native) Instagram for BB10 for now. Frankly, I’m not sure there will ever be," it quoted one of the sources as saying.

AllThingsD noted BB10 debuted with native apps from major online services such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Foursquare.

On the other hand, it also pointed out a port from an Android app may not give BlackBerry 10 users a native feel and may be sluggish.

"There’s no question that BlackBerry would much prefer Instagram for BB10 not to be a wrapped Android app. But sources say that’s the best it’s going to get," it said.

Meanwhile, AllThingsD quoted BlackBerry VP for global alliances Martyn Mallick as saying BlackBerry has a "strong partnership and are actively engaged around Instagram support for BB10.”

“(B)ut we do not have an availability date at this point,” Mallick said of such an app.

AllThingsD noted more than 90 million people use Instagram on a monthly basis, and the lack of a native version for BB10 "leaves a gaping hole in the platform, and raises questions for smartphone users and developers both." — TJD, GMA News
