A new Acer eight-inch tablet running Microsoft's Windows 8 is in the works, according to photos posted online by a French tech site.

French site Minimachines.net said the photos were of an Acer Iconia W3, which could be the first eight-inch table running Windows 8, according to tech site Engadget.

"We don't know if there's any truth to claims of a launch around the back to school season in September, although that would certainly be appropriate timing for what could be a welcome backpack companion," Engadget said.

Should the photos prove accurate, it said Taiwan-based Acer could be the first to take action on smaller Windows 8 tablets.

However, the photos in the report on Minimachines had been taken down as of Tuesday morning (Manila time).

Engadget noted Microsoft has repeatedly hinted at smaller Windows 8 tablets, though there had been no hint of such devices until now - if the photos are accurate.

On the other hand, Engadget said the processing power may not be the tablet's strong suit: a 1.8GHz Atom Z2760 and 2GB of RAM.

Yet, it said the tablet would be "small enough to fit in one hand while carrying the full software support of a PC."

"It will reportedly include front and rear cameras as well as a possible microSDHC slot, and the accessories we see in the purported leak involve both a tiny keyboard dock and a cover that doubles as a kickstand," it added. — TJD, GMA News
