Star Wars: The Clone Wars may have been cancelled, but fall of 2014 will see the emergence of a new animated series called Star Wars Rebels, according to ScreenCrush.com and Comingsoon.net.

The new action-packed series will take place in the two decades of darkness between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

As it will most likely chronicle the consolidation of the dreaded Empire and the tightening of its grip on the galaxy, expect to see how the last of the Jedi Knights are hunted down and the birth of the rebellion. As of now, however, more specific plot details remain a closely-guarded secret.

The series will be preceded by an hour-long special telecast on Disney Channel, after which Star Wars Rebels will begin proper.

Serving as executive producer and writer of the introductory episode will be Simon Kinberg, who was the screenwriter and producer for X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Joining him as executive producer is Dave Filoni, who was the supervising director of Star Wars: The Clones Wars. Greg Weismen, known for his work on animation greats such as The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice, and Disney’s Gargoyles, will be another executive producer.

“The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers,” said president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, Gary Marsh.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say: “I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe. I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”
