Animator makes Philippine history come to life through LEGO

Want to make Philippine history more interesting to kids?

Animator Dudz Clotario had the bright idea of making stop-motion videos in LEGO re-enacting historical events through a project he calls “Snippets of Philippine History.”

On Wednesday, Clotario released a trailer of his first video, "The Battle of Tirad Pass in LEGO." In the scene, the American and Filipino camps engage in a shooting spree – tufts of cotton come out of each soldier's gun with every shot.

"There's no blood because I don't want it to be too graphic," Clotario said in an email interview with GMA News Online.

Since the company does not make guns, Clotario had to improvise by making toy fishing rods appear like rifles.

"This project is just a fun way to tell our history. Just snippets of what happened in history and how I imagined it."

Among the scenes he will be doing are the Battle of Mactan, the story of Gabriela Silang, and the battle fought by Private First Class Narcisco Ortilano during World War II.

Aside from doing three- to five-minute animated snippets of history, some trivia will be included in the next videos as well.

"I am planning to compile these animations, then maybe make it a canned TV show. Filipinos have great talent in animation but our programming (on) national TV is still dominated by foreign cartoons. This is my (attempt) to introduce our own Filipino content in a fun, educational way," Clotario said.

"I am not fully focused on it because I have work, but I hope this history animation series will be successful and make it to national TV someday."
