Senate ratifies bicam report on Free WiFi Bill

The Senate on Wednesday ratified the bicameral committee report on the proposal providing free wireless Internet access in public places.

“Isang pirma na lang magiging batas na ito,” said Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, chairman of the Senate committee on science and technology.

Aquino said the proposal would not only empower Filipinos with Internet access, but will also provide them access to jobs, livelihood, and business opportunities, among others.

The proposed law seeks to ensure free wireless Internet access in schools, MRT stations, public hospitals and health centers, public parks, airports, seaports, and transport terminals, among others.

One of the provisions in the proposal state that telecommunications companies should be granted permits to put up infrastructure within seven days. — TJD, GMA News
