ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Gov’t launches free Wi-Fi across 24-km EDSA starting June 12

Free public Wi-Fi will be available across the whole 24-kilometer stretch of EDSA starting June 12, Independence Day.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will be making high-speed internet connectivity available at street level in Metro Manila's main thoroughfare, it announced on Saturday.

The agency had set up access points in all Metro Rail Transit (MRT) stations and in between stations, the government said on its website.

Service testing of the project will be done on Sunday, June 10.

The project is in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's promise during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the government will provide free Wi-Fi services in public areas nationwide.

"Wi-Fi access shall be provided at no charge in selected public places including parks, plazas, public libraries, schools, government hospitals, train stations, airports, and seaports," he said.

Duterte had also ordered the DITC to develop a national broadband plan. — Jessica Bartolome/MDM, GMA News
