Yahoo Groups to use email distribution instead of message boards

Web services provider Yahoo recently announced that its community platform Yahoo Groups will be undergoing some revamp to align with the modern needs of its users.

"Today, most Yahoo Groups activity happens in your email inbox, not on the bulletin boards where Yahoo Groups started in the pre-smartphone age," it said in an advisory.

"As our users’ habits have evolved, we have begun the process of evolving our approach to help active Yahoo Groups thrive and migrate to our email platform," it added.

Yahoo said that more than 10 million groups have been created by netizens in the past years.

All these groups will be made private starting December 14, 2019.

"Any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed. We believe privacy is critical and made this decision to better align with our overall principles," Yahoo said.

Users may still keep the contents they posted and stored in their Yahoo Groups by downloading it before December 14.

To give way to the transition, uploading and hosting of new content were disabled in the Yahoo Groups website since October 28.

Also, users were only enabled to join a Yahoo Group through an invite from a moderator or if his/her request to join is approved by a moderator.

New Yahoo Groups may still be formed by its users, according to Yahoo, as it acknowledged that many communities still rely on this platform. — RSJ, GMA News
