OPPO to launch DSS-enabled smartphones next year

Smartphone brand OPPO on Tuesday said that it may begin rolling out Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS)-enabled 5G smartphones next year, which provides a “more stable, seamless, and speedy” 5G connection in comparison to 4G network.

“OPPO plans to launch 5G smartphones that support DSS in the next year, which will provide more stable, seamless, and speedy 5G connections, and hence a better user experience,”  Andy Wu, OPPO vice president, said in a statement.

5G network “features high speed and low latency, thus boosting video quality reducing latency significantly to create an exceptional 5G video call experience for users,” the company said.

OPPO said that it made the industry’s first DSS data call using its first DSS-enabled 5G smartphone.

“DSS technology enables carriers to leverage existing 4G and 5G frequency spectrums and networks which accelerate the global deployment of 5G services and bring 5G experience on a broader scale,” it added.

The call connected a conversation between representatives from Switzerland and Australia through Swisscom and Telstra’s commercial 5G network that features Ericsson Spectrum Sharing (ESS) technology.

According to OPPO, it was achieved by connection-sharing via 3GPP Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) band.

OPPO worked with Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies—a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated—Swisscom, and Telstra for the project.

In a separate interview on RCR Wireless News, Qualcomm’s Dean Brenner, vice president of spectrum strategy and technology policy, said dynamic spectrum sharing “accelerates and expands the 5G roll out instantly because we don’t have to do re-farming. We can immediately get 5G deployed into the legacy 4G bands.” —Joahna Lei Casilao/VDS, GMA News
