Privacy commission warns public vs ‘smishing’

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Saturday warned the public against “smishing” or a type of phishing through text messages.

Interviewed on PTV’s Laging Handa, NPC Commissioner Raymund Liboro urged the public not to click links sent via SMS from unknown numbers.

(Smishing is a way for hackers to obtain personal information by sending links via SMS, which will bring them to a website asking them to provide bank account details and passwords that may eventually lead to the stealing of their savings.)

The Privacy chief said the agency is now looking into reports of smishing concerning contact numbers obtained through contact tracing forms.
