University of the Philippines Twitter account 'hacked'

The official Twitter account of the University of the Philippines (UP) System (@upsystem) appears to have been hacked.

Both the profile and cover photos of the UP account have been removed.

The account name has been changed to Takashi Murakami — a Japanese artist known for his colorful artworks.

Its location has also been changed to Tokyo and the account information in its biography had been deleted.

At past 10 p.m., university-related contents were still posted in the Twitter account which currently has at least 207,500 followers.

The University of the Philippines Media and Public Relations Office (UP MPRO), which maintains the UP System website (up.edu.ph) and the UP System’s official social media accounts, said that unknown users took over @upsystem on Twitter at 7:20 p.m. on Monday.

"Since then, the account has been renamed and has posted content not affiliated with the University," UP said in a statement on Facebook.

"The UP MPRO has been trying to retrieve the @upsystem account as soon as possible," it added.

UP said the incident deprived its online constituency on Twitter "of important announcements, news stories, and other online content that the Office publishes on the University’s website and promotes on its social media accounts."

UP MPRO is calling on the UP community members "to keep abreast with the latest announcements, news stories, and online features from UP via the official accounts on other social media platforms." —Sundy Locus/NB, GMA News
