Isang accelerates while crossing Balintang Channel

After making landfall in Isabela, Tropical Depression Isang made landfall anew over Northern Luzon and accelerated as it crossed the Balintang Channel in Northern Philippines before noon Wednesday.

PAGASA, in its 11 a.m. advisory, said Isang was moving north-northwest at 22 kph, still packing maximum winds of 55 kph near the center.

It said that, as of 10 a.m., Isang was estimated over Calayan Island.

"Nag-landfall uli (si Isang) 5 a.m. sa Lallo (Cagayan) at ngayon sa Calayan Islands (Isang made landfall again over Lallo in Cagayan and is now over the Calayan Islands)," PAGASA forecaster Alvin Pura said on dzBB radio.

PAGASA said Isang may be 540 km northwest of Aparri, Cagayan or out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday morning.

Under Storm Signal No. 1 are:

  • Ilocos Norte
  • Apayao
  • Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan Islands
  • Batanes

PAGASA advised residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under Signal No. 1 to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides.

It said Isang will enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas.

Also, it said Isang may bring rainfall of 5 to 15 mm per hour (moderate to heavy) within its 300-km diameter. — TJD, GMA News
