PAGASA: Nando intensifies, Batanes only province under Signal 2

Tropical Storm Nando (international name Kong-Rey) intensified as it continued moving north-northwest early Tuesday, with the Batanes under Storm Signal Number 2, state weather forecasters said. Under Storm Signal No. 1 were the provinces of Cagayan (including Calayan and Babuyan Islands), Apayao, and Isabela. PAGASA, in its 5 a.m. advisory, said Tropical Storm Nando was estimated to be 200 km east of Aparri, Cagayan as of 4 a.m. Nando now packed maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. Nando is moving north-northwest at 15 kph and is expected to be 115 km northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning. By Thursday morning, it is expected to be 390 km north of Basco, Batanes. By Friday morning it is expected to be 680 km north of Basco, Batanes or 250 km northeast of Taiwan. PAGASA said Nando may bring rainfall of 10 to 25 mm per hour (heavy to intense) within its 400-km diameter. It added Nando may enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring "light to moderate with at times heavy rains and thunderstorms" over the rest of Luzon. "Sea travel is risky over the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon," it said. — DVM, GMA News
