Public Storm Warning Signal 4 up over Masbate, parts of Visayas


The weather bureau raised Public Storm Warning Signal 4 over Masbate and parts of Visayas on Thursday night as Typhoon Yolanda moved closer to Eastern Samar.
 
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's 11:00 p.m. bulletin, areas under Public Storm Warning Signal 4 are:
 
Luzon
  • Masbate
 
Visayas
  • Northern Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Samar, Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Biliran Province
  • Extreme Northern Cebu including Bantayan Island
  • Capiz, Aklan
  • Northern Antique
  • Northern Iloilo
 
Winds of more than 185 kilometers per hour are expected in at least 12 hours. The strong winds are expected to uproot many large trees and coconut, rice, and corn plantations may suffer severe losses, PAGASA said.
 
"In the overall, damage to affected communities can be very heavy," the weather bureau said, adding travel and outdoor activities should be cancelled.

Winds of 101-185kph are expected within at least 18 hours and they will be strong enough to uproot "some trees," PAGASA said.

Residents of these areas can expect heavy damage to agriculture and considerable damage to structures of light to medium construction.

Winds of 61-100kph are expected within 24 hours. Those winds will be strong enough to cause moderate damage to agriculture and blow away old galvanized iron roofing.

According to the latest PAGASA data, Yolanda was 290km east southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

After hitting Guiuan, the typhoon is expected to traverse Biliran, the northern tip of Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Romblon, Semirara Island, the southern part of Mindoro, then Busuanga in Palawan before exiting the Philippine landmass early Saturday morning.
 
Heavy to intense rainfall (10-30 millimeters per hour) can be expected within the 600-km diameter of the typhoon, PAGASA said.

Sea travel will be risky along the Northern Luzon seaboard and the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon until the storm leaves.
 
PAGASA also alerted those living in coastal areas under Storm Signals 4,3,and 2 against waves that can reach up to 7 meters high. — JDS, GMA News
