PAGASA: Signal 2 up over Batanes: Signal 1 over Cagayan, Babuyan and Calayan islands


Typhoon Henry (international name Matmo) continues to affect northern Luzon, with Storm Signal No. 2 up over the Batanes group of islands, and Signal No. 1 up over Cagayan Province and the Babuyan and Calayan group of islands.

At 4:00 a.m., Tuesday, weather service PAGASA located Henry 240 km southeast of Basco, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center, and gustiness of up to 160 kph. Rainfall within the typhoon's 500-km diameter was estimated at 7.5 to 15 mm per hour (moderate to heavy).

Henery is moving northwestwards at 24 kph. PAGASA forecaster Gener Quitlong said Henry was on track to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday, when it will be 370 km north of Basco, Batanes or near central Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Aurora province will be cloudy with moderate to occasional heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms. Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Zambales, Bataan and Western Visayas will experience monsoon Rains.

The rest of Luzon will be cloudy with light to moderate rainshower and thunderstorms, while the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds from the northeast to northwest will prevail over northern Luzon, and coming from the southwest over the rest of the country. Coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough.

Fisherfolk and those with small seacraft are warned against venturing out over the eastern, southern and western seaboards of Luzon, and the seaboards of Visayas. — Joel Locsin/DVM, GMA News
