Monsoon rain over north, Central Luzon as Typhoon Jose continues northwest

(Updated 8:25 a.m.) Rain may fall over Metro Manila and much of Luzon on Monday, as Typhoon Jose (Halong) continued to move closer to Aurora province, state weather agency PAGASA said.

Although Typhoon Jose is not likely to make landfall, it will enhance the southwest monsoon, according to PAGASA.

Meanwhile, the Ilocos region and Central Luzon may expect monsoon rain that may trigger flash floods and landslides, PAGASA said.

"Nasa karagatan pa ito (Typhoon Jose), hinahatak nito, na-enhance niya ang habagat," PAGASA forecaster Connie Dadivas said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Ankle-deep floods were already reported on Monday affecting parts of Bataan province.

Bataan Governor Albert Garcia earlier suspended classes
in the province due to the threat of monsoon rain.

Gale warning

Dadivas also said PAGASA has issued a gale warning discouraging fishermen and small seacraft in Luzon from venturing to sea.

As of 4 a.m., PAGASA said Jose was estimated at 870 km east of Casiguran, Aurora, with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph and gustiness of up to 230 kph.

It said Jose is forecast to move west-northwest at 11 kph.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have occasional rain while Visayas will be cloudy with light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rest of Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, it added.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said moderate to strong winds from the southwest will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and coming from the south to southwest over Mindanao.

Coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough, it added. — Joel Locsin/DVM/KG, GMA News
