A tropical storm from the east entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Thursday and was locally codenamed Amang, state weather agency PAGASA said.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Amang (international codename Mekkhala) was estimated at 950 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 4 a.m.

The storm has an estimated rainfall of 7.5 to 20 mm per hour (heavy to intense) within its 300-km diameter.

Amang packed maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph and is forecast to move west-northwest at 19 kph.

"Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon and of Visayas," it advised.

PAGASA said Amang is expected to be 1,020 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar Friday morning, and 380 km East of Legaspi Saturday morning.

By Sunday morning, it is expected to be 340 km east of Infanta, Quezon.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
