PHIVOLCS: No tsunami threat on PHL after Papua New Guinea quake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Tuesday allayed fears of a tsunami stemming from a magnitude-7.5 quake that occurred in Papua New Guinea.
In an advisory, Phivolcs said the quake had occurred in the New Ireland region in Papua New Guinea at 9:44 a.m. Philippine time.
"No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast located within 100 kilometers of the epicenter," it said.
"(T)here is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," it added. -Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
